Cardiff Bay Barrage and Penarth

I wasn't aware that there was a concrete society award - I presume the award applies to the concrete rather than society!. The pink elephant looks down on the extensive concrete jetty and the metal louvre structures over the sluice gates of the Cardiff Bay barrage. Even early in the morning when I took the shots, the bridges were constantly lifting to let boats through the locks. Penarth esplanade and pier have undergone a lot of modernisation in recent years enjoyed on Saturday by fisherman and the occasional tourist.

Senedd building Cardiff Bay

I took the train to Cardiff Bay from Rhiwbina station, which is close to the Travelodge in Whitchurch. It was only £2.05 there and back including a stop off in Cardiff City Centre.

It is two and half years since I visited the Senedd building. The main public building of the National Assembly is an open building into which you can walk, have a cup of coffee in the Oriel on the upper level, and go into the public galleries from the Neuadd on the centre level. It is a sustainable building, built of traditional Welsh materials such as slate and Welsh oak. It is also sustainable in the way it is heated; for example, the earth exchange system uses heat from the bottom of the old dock, on which the Senedd stands, before it became the area which is now Cardiff Bay. The large funnel recirculates the air in the building.

Cardiff Bay

A couple more pictures of the derelict station building at Cardiff Bay - the new rail link still runs from the area but a new platform has been built. This is the front of the building - it has a very Europaean look in this photo.

Here you can see the old platform and the canopy over it.

In another street nearby they obviously started converting an old pub into luxury apartments but then work ceased and the area has been just left
